Flowering rush is well capable of plugging irrigation canals, and changing native habitats in water bodies favoring non-native predator fish species in some areas. It is almost impossible to eradicate once in a water system, and is highly costly to reduce its impact on irrigation networks as shown by the experiences of Montana and Idaho.
